HI, Just wondering why Burnaby lacrosse doesn't have well advertised skill development camps or sessions before the season starts like SBMC Soccer club does so that all the kids at least have a chance to learn what is expected on them. My child played Tyke for a whole year before we found out about "Fun Lacrosse" and the skills taught there. Our coach was great but you can only contribute so much to a team when you are just learning how to hold the stick and catch the ball something that four or five lessons before hand would have remedied. After all they don't teach lacrosse in elementary school so I think we should be more proactive in promoting the sport.
And don't get me started on how unclear the rules are even with the written handout. Our "non contact" Tyke team were armoured up like gladiators and made more contact than you see in most hockey games. The penalties that were called were mostly hard to figure out why they were called as there is never an announcement like "tripping" or "boarding" and it seemed that mostly the larger child would be penalized even if they didn't seem to have done anything other than stand still and let themselves be run into when on defense. |

Maureen, Thank you for your comments.
Burnaby Minor Lacrosse has put on the Fun Lacrosse sessions for the past few years with attendance slowly growing. In terms of additional skills development camps and sessions, like all amateur sports, it boils down to the availability of volunteers, arena space to host, and time committments.
Although it can appear confusing, the rules are fairly straight forward in Lacrosse with more similarities to basketball than hockey.
The referees for the lower age levels are learning themselves and mistakes will happen. The main focus is for everyone to enjoy themselves and the fabulous game of Lacrosse.
Thank you.
